West coast · Surf and sunsets

Rincón

A small town at the island's western tip, known for surf since the 1968 World Surfing Championships, sunsets over the Mona Passage, and a slower pace than the San Juan side.

The town

Rincón sits at the westernmost tip of Puerto Rico. Tourism is its main industry. In November 1968 it hosted the World Surfing Championships, with early rounds at Domes beach; the town's surf culture has grown from there.

Domes takes its name from the BONUS nuclear reactor beside it, which operated from 1964 to 1968, the island's only one. The Punta Higüero lighthouse, built in 1892 and rebuilt in 1922, is listed on the National Register.

The water

The Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, protected under Law 17 of 2004, is known for elkhorn coral and includes Steps Beach. In winter the big swells arrive, and so do humpback whales, with sightings peaking roughly January to March.

Getting here

Rincón is about an hour from Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla and two and a half to three hours by car from San Juan's airport, so frequent travelers should check flights from Aguadilla.
